January Ornie

My January finish is Oct 31 by Nancy Boyarsky of Glory Bee.  It appeared in the September/October issue of Just Cross Stitch in 2009.  It's stitched on 32ct "Ancient" Belfast linen from Picture This Plus with DMC floss.  I finished it with fabric binding just like a quilt and added a vintage key hanger.

Cathi - finish of my January ornament

I finished my January ornament:

I made a little hanging pocket for the upcoming season (in some months...) ;o) Well, it is not an ornament in the original meaning, but I normally use these hanging pockets as wall ornaments and see them therefore as ornaments... :o)

Debbie's January ornament choice

I picked a very simple free Skeleton chart from Sheena Rogers Designs newsletter from October 2012.  It shows a solid background with no stitching on the skeleton to let the white fabric show through.  But I'll use a colored fabric instead and stitch the skeleton with white floss.  I hope to have it done by the end of the month!

Origins of Hallowe'en

So I've started stitching my first Hallowe'en ornie of the year and I was thinking about Hallowe'en and how it all started.

Like many of our modern festivals Hallowe'en has become more secular after years of being a Christian celebration built upon a Pagan festival.  Other examples include Easter and Christmas.

Plum Street Samplers

The Celts celebrated the feast of Samhain (the name comes from the Old Irish for Summer's End) as the first and most important of the four quarter days in the Medieval Gaelic calendar.  The other three being Imbolc (1st February), Beltaine (1st May) and Lughnasa (1st August).  Samhain marked the end of the Harvest Season and the start of the darker days of Winter.  It was seen as a time of year when spirits and the fae could cross the borders into our world more easily usual.

Gryphon's Moon

When the Celtic countries became Christian the Church realised that converting the old Pagan festivals into religious days was the best way to get the peasants and common folk to change their ways.  After all, you can't go dancing naked round the hill-tops if you are praying in church all day!

Janet Morningstar

For Christians, 1st November is All Hallows' Day or All Saints' Day which makes 31st October All Hallows' Eve.  Hallows' Eve being shortened to Hallowe'en with e'en meaning "evening".

Waxing Moon Designs

So many of the modern customs have their roots in traditions started by the Celts or the Christians and molded, changed and adapted across the years.  I wonder if the early Pagans or first European Christians would recognise our current celebrations?

If you'd like to read more about the origins of Hallowe'en I started at this Wiki page and wandered around from there!

I thought it would be fun to look at different aspects of Hallowe'en each month to tie in with our themes too.

nb All images in the post can be clicked to a stockist's page.  These are designs I chose to illustrate the topic and to do a little enabling, they are not designs I have stitched myself (yet!)

Welcome to the 2014 Challenge!

Welcome my fiends to the 2014 Hallowe'en Ornie SAL Blog.

I have chosen the themes for this year with the help of your suggestions and my 11 year old son who is a big fan of Hallowe'en.  I hope you like them.

We will start the year with a free choice, I thought this was only fair with the late start!  Maybe there was a design you were planning to stitch last year but didn't get round to it?  Maybe you have a WIP you'd like to finish now Christmas is out of the way?

Please post your ideas and starts now then a photo of your finished piece by the end of the month.  Or the beginning of next month!  To join the blog you will need to contact me with your email addess, mine is on the right hand sidebar.

I'm planning a page of links to freebie charts to help those of us who are taking part in "Stitch from Stash" this year so feel free to send me any links you have.  Please note they must be genuine freebies not Pinterest copies.
